Why Does This Matter?

Untreated cavities can lead to more serious and costly problems. Early detection and treatment are key to preserving your natural teeth.

  • Infection and Severe Pain

Cavities can progress to the tooth nerve, causing intense pain and requiring root canal treatment.

  • Tooth Loss

Without treatment, tooth destruction can become so extensive that extraction is the only option.

  • Higher Costs

Delaying treatment transforms a simple filling into a need for crown, implant, or root canal treatment.

  • Aesthetic Confidence

Visible decay or dark fillings affect your smile confidence. Modern restorations are invisible and natural-looking.

  • Comfortable Eating

Untreated cavities cause pain when eating hot, cold, or sweet foods, limiting your dietary choices.

  • Prevent Spread

Decay-causing bacteria can spread to adjacent teeth. Early treatment protects your entire mouth.

04 Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is restorative dentistry?
Restorative dentistry is the area of dental medicine dedicated to repairing and rebuilding teeth damaged by cavities, fractures, wear, or erosion. The goal is to restore the shape, function, and aesthetics of teeth while preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible. We use minimally invasive techniques and state-of-the-art biocompatible materials, such as composite resins that perfectly mimic the natural color and translucency of your teeth.
What is the difference between composite resin and amalgam fillings?
Composite resin is currently the material of choice for several reasons: it's tooth-colored (invisible aesthetics), chemically bonds to the tooth (allows more conservative preparations), contains no mercury, and allows repairs without replacing the entire restoration. Amalgam (silver-colored) was used in the past, contains mercury, requires removal of more healthy tooth structure, and is visible. At our clinic, we exclusively use state-of-the-art composite resins — their benefits are clearly superior.
Does a composite filling hurt?
No — the procedure is performed with local anesthesia, so you won't feel pain during treatment. After the anesthesia wears off, there may be some temporary sensitivity, especially to extreme temperatures (hot/cold), which usually disappears within a few days. If the cavity is very superficial, anesthesia may not even be needed. Our goal is to ensure maximum comfort throughout the procedure.
How long does a composite resin filling last?
With proper care, a quality composite resin restoration can last 7 to 15 years or more. Longevity depends on several factors: size and location of the restoration, chewing forces, habits (like teeth grinding), oral hygiene, and diet. Small restorations on front teeth tend to last longer than large restorations on molars. Regular maintenance appointments allow us to detect and repair small problems before they become larger.
What are nanohybrid composite resins?
Nanohybrid resins represent the latest evolution in restorative materials. They combine nanoparticles (extremely small, 5-100 nanometers) with larger microparticles, offering the best of both worlds: excellent polish and surface shine from nanoparticles, combined with the mechanical strength of microparticles. The result is restorations more resistant to wear, with superior surface finish that stays polished longer, and aesthetics comparable to natural enamel.
Can I replace my amalgam fillings with composite resin?
Yes, it's possible to replace amalgam fillings with composite resin, and many patients choose to do so for aesthetic reasons. However, the decision should be weighed: if the amalgam is in good condition and there's no cavity, replacement means removing healthy tooth structure. We recommend replacement when: the amalgam is fractured or leaking; there's secondary decay; or for aesthetic reasons very important to the patient. We evaluate each case individually to recommend the best approach.
What is biomimetic dentistry?
Biomimetic dentistry is an approach that mimics nature — restorations are designed to replicate the natural properties of the tooth (elasticity, strength, translucency). Instead of simply "filling a hole," we rebuild the tooth layer by layer, respecting the original anatomy. We use advanced adhesive materials and techniques that behave similarly to natural enamel and dentin. The result: restored teeth that function, feel, and look natural, with greater longevity and lower risk of fractures.
When is a crown needed instead of a filling?
A crown is recommended when tooth destruction is extensive — usually when more than 50-60% of tooth structure is compromised. Common situations include: root canal treated teeth, large fractures affecting cusps, very extensive cavities, or teeth with many previous restorations. The crown wraps around the entire tooth like a "protective helmet," redistributing chewing forces and preventing fractures. For smaller losses, a direct composite restoration is sufficient and more conservative.
How to prevent new cavities after a filling?
Prevention is key: brush 2x daily with fluoride toothpaste; daily use of dental floss or interdental brushes; reduce frequency of sugary foods and drinks (it's not the amount, it's the frequency that matters); regular professional hygiene appointments (GBT); and professional fluoride application when indicated. Remember: secondary cavities (around existing restorations) are one of the main causes of restoration replacement. With good hygiene, your restorations will last much longer.
Can fillings stain or discolor over time?
Modern composite resins are very resistant to discoloration, but they may experience some staining over the years, especially with frequent consumption of coffee, tea, red wine, or tobacco. To minimize: avoid these products in the first 48 hours after the filling (when the resin is still stabilizing); maintain good oral hygiene; get regular professional polishing at maintenance appointments. If there's significant staining, professional polishing usually resolves it — in more severe cases, the surface layer can be replaced without redoing the entire restoration.
What to do if I feel sensitivity after a filling?
Some post-operative sensitivity is normal and can last a few days to weeks, especially in deep restorations. Recommendations: use toothpaste for sensitive teeth; avoid extreme temperatures temporarily; chew on the other side for the first few days. Sensitivity should gradually decrease. Contact us if: sensitivity increases instead of decreasing; there's spontaneous pain or pain when biting; it persists beyond 2-3 weeks. It may be necessary to adjust the occlusion (bite) or, in rare cases, investigate other causes.
Are fillings covered by health insurance?
Many health insurance and dental plans partially or fully cover composite resin restorations, especially when there's clinical indication (cavity, fracture). Coverage varies by plan — some only cover amalgam and the patient pays the difference for resin. Our administrative team helps verify your coverage and maximize your benefits. We also offer payment facilities for non-covered treatments.
