Psychology

Psychological support and psychotherapy for children, adolescents and adults, in a safe, confidential and non-judgmental space.

In short

Psychology consultations are a space of care for those going through a difficult time, wanting to better understand what they feel, or looking to change something in their lives. We work with adults around anxiety, depression, stress, grief, relationship difficulties, sleep disturbances and identity questions; with adolescents in the school, family or self-image context; and with children in collaboration with their parents, around emotional, behavioural or adjustment difficulties. The first session is an assessment — we discuss the reason for the visit, the context and what kind of follow-up makes sense. All information is confidential, in line with the Portuguese Order of Psychologists code of ethics.

Areas of Support

When and how it can help

Life brings difficult phases. The Psychology consultation is a space to make sense of what you feel — and to take concrete steps.

  • Anxiety and stress

Generalized anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, persistent occupational stress.

  • Depression and prolonged sadness

Low mood, lack of energy, loss of interest, difficulty leaving home.

  • Relationship difficulties

Couple, family or workplace conflicts. Difficulty starting or sustaining close relationships.

  • Grief and loss

Support during bereavement, end of a relationship, serious illness or other significant loss.

  • Children and adolescents

Emotional, behavioural, school or peer-relationship difficulties.

  • Self-knowledge

For those who want to understand themselves better, make an important choice or simply pause and reflect.

No commitment to continue

How the first session works

The first session is mostly a conversation. No automatic diagnoses, no judgment — it is your space.

  1. Step 01

    Introduction and reason

We talk about what brought you here, your current context and your history, at a pace that feels comfortable.

  2. Step 02

    Understanding what is happening

Together, we identify the central issues and what you would like to change or ease.

  3. Step 03

    Choosing the path

By the end of the first or second session, we decide together whether to continue and at what pace.

Therapeutic Approaches

Methods and lines of work

We adapt the approach to your case, grounded in scientific evidence.

  • Cognitive-behavioural therapy

A structured, goal-oriented approach to changing thought and behaviour patterns that maintain suffering.

  • Systemic and family approaches

When useful, family or couple are integral parts of the therapeutic process.

  • Person-centred therapy

A space of empathic, non-judgmental listening, at your own pace.

  • Mindfulness and emotion regulation

Tools to recognize, name and regulate intense emotions in daily life.

Indications

When it is worth starting

It makes sense to book if

  • Anxiety, sadness or stress have lasted weeks or months
  • You are going through a difficult phase — bereavement, separation, major change
  • Recurring difficulties show up in relationships or at work
  • You feel you need space to better understand yourself
  • Your child or adolescent shows emotional or behavioural difficulties

You may need a different kind of support if

  • There is acute psychiatric crisis — hospital emergency is the first step
  • You are looking for medication — only a psychiatrist can prescribe
  • You expect immediate answers: psychological work is gradual
A word from our Psychologist
Seeing a psychologist is not a sign of weakness — it is an act of self-care. Many people arrive thinking their problem is 'not serious enough.' I can assure you: if it is taking up space in your head and your life, that is reason enough. We work with time, confidentiality and respect for each person's pace. What you share here stays here.

04 Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know it is time to see a psychologist?
You do not need a "big reason." Seeking support makes sense whenever something is holding you back — anxiety that does not let up, prolonged sadness, sleep difficulties, relationship conflicts, feeling paralysed in front of decisions, or simply the desire to know yourself better. There is no minimum amount of suffering required to start.
What happens in a first session?
The first session is mostly a conversation. We talk about what brings you here, your history, what is happening now, and what you hope to get out of follow-up. No demands, no judgment. By the end of that first or second session we decide together whether continuing makes sense and what cadence fits.
Is what we discuss confidential?
Yes, completely. Professional secrecy is an ethical and legal duty of psychologists, set out in the Code of Ethics of the Portuguese Order of Psychologists. Everything you share is confidential, with the only exceptions being those provided for by law (serious risk to yourself or others). Even in those cases, your safety is the priority.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
The psychologist works through dialogue: assessment, listening, psychotherapeutic intervention, and strategies to shift thought and behaviour patterns. The psychiatrist is a medical doctor and can prescribe medication. When it makes sense to combine both, we coordinate with the psychiatrist for coherent care.
Do you work with children and adolescents?
Yes. With children, work is done in partnership with parents — starting with an initial session without the child, then sessions with the child (often through play) and regular check-ins with the family. With adolescents, the space is theirs: what they share is confidential, except in situations of risk that must be communicated to parents.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no single answer. Some processes are brief and focused on a specific goal (8 to 16 sessions), while deeper work can last from one to several years. The pace and duration are reviewed with you regularly — it is not a decision we make for you.
